David Sedaris

David Sedaris

David Sedaris (born December 26, 1956) is a Grammy Award-nominated Greek-American humorist, writer, comedian, bestselling author, and radio contributor.

Earlier this week I posted a reading by humorist David Sedaris. My eldest daughter found his essay slightly offensive. That sent me on a search of of other Sedaris material. I came across his story, “I Used to Be a Smart Guy” in Esquire Magazine.

I loved his premise. He recounts that ”As I child, I’d always harbored a sneaking suspicion that I might be a genius. This theory was entirely my own, corroborated by no one, but so what? Being misunderstood was all part of the package. My father occasionally referred to me as “Smart Guy,” but eventually I realized that when saying it, he usually meant just the opposite.”

He had me hooked. I had to read the entire story to see what happened when an adult David Sedaris ends up taking an IQ test. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
