GandhiMohandas Karamchand Gandhi (October 2, 1869 –  January 30, 1948) was the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement.

Mahatma was not Gandhi’s first name. The word Mahatma, while often mistaken for Gandhi’s given name in the West, is taken from the Sanskrit words maha meaning Great and atma meaning Soul.

There are many wonderful Gandhi quotes. Years ago my mother clipped the following Gandhi quote from the newspaper. I posted it in my classroom as a daily reminder of Gandhi and my mother.

Roots of Violence:

Wealth without Work
Pleasure without Conscience
Knowledge without Character
Commerce without Morality
Science without Humanity
Worship without Sacrifice
Politics without Principles
